Hi guys,
This is my first post so bear with me. I recently bought a BA XR8, and it seems to ping at WOT, I don't notice it at all at part throttle, seems to mostly happen when it's hot. I know hotter air will make pinging worse but i thought it would have a knock sensor so I assume this shouldn't be happening at all. The car had a herrods exhaust and headers fitted from the dealer when new. I bought the car off a family member and they reckon it's only started in the last few months, maybe just summer weather? I've just got a Flash tuner so i suppose a dyno tune could solve it, but i was wondering if anyone had any ideas? Also on a possibly related note, the car has done about 90K and never had the plugs replaced is this usual? |

I wouldn't be messing around with a ping, if its bad enough it could do some serious damage. Try running it on BP Ultimate for a start, taking it to a tuner might not be a bad idea either. Plugs on a Boss are due at 105k if I remember correctly so it probably couldn't hurt to replace them a little early either.

BA V8's don't have knock control.
You might want to check your your fuel flow. When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? |

I'll have a look at the fuel filter, don't think it's ever been replaced, I'll do the plugs as well. As for BP ultimate, I work for an oil company that isn't BP so it's just been topped up with another 98 octane fuel.
No knock sensor? that's suprising. Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes. |

bad o2 sensors could also be the cause of pinigng

Easiest way will be to hook it up to a diagnostic unit and see if there are any codes, My boss 290 was gutless and pinging and it turned out to be a bad MAP sensor

Quick update,
Took the car to Ford the other day and after a long wait, they found two problems, The purge valve was stuck open (something to do with fuel tank vapours) and there was another air leak on the plenum. When he ran the fault codes there was a Rich and a Lean fault code on the o2 sensor, when they were running the car it switched fine. both have been repaired, car didn't ping then I flashed the 98 Octane tune that comes with the flash tuner from CAPA and it started pinging again I assume this is just the tune and not the car flashed the factory tune back on and it went away. So I'm waiting till this tank is empty then I'll fill her up with normal unleaded and see if the ping is there on the factory tune. |

I had this same kind of problem with my Fairlane AU V8. It took me a while to find out until my friend came and suggested to cleam my MAF sensor and reset my ECU and TCM. Amazingly with just the use of isoprophyl alcohol it fixed the bloddy pinging. This is photo of where you need to clean the two wires. I hope this helps.
