f**k thing has blown, and its gotten pretty bad, almost pure coolant coming out the back, wont start now.
Is it worth getting it fixed, or should I get a AU engine?

how many k's on the current motor,did it run fine before the gasket went?
if it was fine before the gaket went maybe a conversion would be more expensive than fixing. if its worn and has heaps of k's then a conversion may be more worth while. depends on a lot of factors as to which would be the best option.

well depends dude
if u can do it yourself it is cheap as to replace au conversion is a bit more as u need engine also eb run dizzy au have coil pack an EL engine might be the go?

take the head off first, if its pumping water into a cylinder you shouldnt be trying to crank the car... might have bent a rod if it has... water doesnt compress!
if its just gasket, with no other damage (cracked/corroded head?) then put a new gasket and head bolts in and see how it goes... if the motor is up the sh!t then at least you only paid for a gasket and bolt kit... otherwise i reckon a modified AU motor.. they dont appear to cost too much for what you get, and just swap all the parts over, manifold, ignition, etc. from your old motor to the new motor... thats what i plan on doing with my EF when the gasket goes... got quoted 1100 for a reco head and new gasket fitted by my mechanic.. i figure for that much i can fit a whole motor with far less k's on it and a better bottom end at least.... sure i would need to do some work but i think it would be worth it in the long run... good luck with it either way! |

Can't you remove the coil pack and replace it with a dizzy? if you can I'd say get the AU motor and drop it in after you do a sump clearance modification first. Assuming you do the job yourself, it tends to end up cheaper. phong =P~

Head is corroded, it seems the f**k who owned it before me went for a quick fix with that head gasket goop s**t. Its basically f**k, I'll probably go for an AU engine, anyone recommend a good wrecker in Adelaide?

if the bottom end is still good maybe just get a reco head for it?
if you want a whole engine check the ebay guy that sells the modified AU motors, theres quite a few threads around here from people that have fitted them, make sure you read up a bit first before you buy anything

The pos has been towed to our mechanic.
Don't know whats getting done yet, will probably know tomorrow some time after I find out everything wrong with it.

buy a 2nd hand head, get a pressure test + vac test the valves and surface done...buy a vrs set and ford metal head gaskit
id say $300 should cover parts and machining, fitting the head yourself is not that hard....It was one of the first things I ever did myself when I was younger and didnt f**k it AU engine might not cost much more that this but there is a lot of stuffing around with fitting and adapting things....how much time do u have and how much is your time worth???

You can fit a dizzy at a AU AFAIK. Just take out coil pack and fit dizzy and then fix the timing.

AU is easy to do.. Just swap everything over from manifold to dissy, engine mount brackets ...
Bolt or weld a 20 X 20 mm across front crossmember and cut centre out to give sump clearance... It will even run with AU injectors...
