hey i was just wondering if its safe to jump start another car (say a 1982 ka laser, on account of its gone flat and is stuck in the garage where the falcon is supposed to be) from the el futura?...like can u just jump it normally??...uno positive to positive negative to negative/earth??...i have been told that if u do something(i dunno what it is tho) wrong u can blow the ECU chip on the falcon...is this true??...and if so whats the correct way to jump without ruining the falcon??
any help greatly appreciated...thanks ~dave~

as long as you dont cross over the terminals it will be fine, POSITIVE TO POSITIVE, NEGATIVE TO NEGATIVE and you'll be safe.
Blowing ecus and melting wires only happens when u go positive to negative, can do ALOT of damage James |

yeah i'd have to say putting short circuit current through an ECU cant be the best thing for em.

if you happen to look in your manual it should have the correct procedure, im pretty sure you have to go positive to positive, Negative (not from you EL's battery but the motor or some other earthed part) to the negative terminal on the other car.
Otherwise you ECU will be toast.

i always just positive on positive and put the negative somewhere like the strut tower.. never had any problems

ive used my EL to jump a mates car probably 20 times, positive to positive, negative to negative (battery not an earth) ive heard you should use an earth rather than negative battery, but ive never had a problem. just do it in the right order
negative on charged car, negative on discharged car, positive on discharged car, positive on charged car or are the cars around the other way??? aaahh cant remember, just do it from habit.... anyone??

the reason for telling u to use an earth not on the battery terminal is because it is supposed to be the last connection u make. when a battery discharges it produces a flammable gas and the last connection can make a spark which in turn ignites the gas.
also, generally speaking Falcon ECU's are fairly hardy ones and it takes a fair bit to fry them, except the EBII/ED ABS computers. Simply disconnecting power from an ABS equiped falcon with the ignition on will quite commonly fry the ABS computer. |

well with that last compent no ecu's are that (hardy really) even if they have alont of resistors and diods to stop voltage spikes.
a ecu run's on 14v. a voltage spike from even a person can be up to 20,000 v which can fry the circuit easy. thats why they say dont touch the pins on a ecu. and thats the reason also why on car's with ecu when jump starting them u put the earth point on the cars body to try and reduce the chance of a voltage spike to the ecu's |

i agree, Jumpstart packs are great. I use it on my boat as well to make sure my battery doesn't go flat

Ive had one of these for ages, plus a battery charger - life savers they are. No worry about jump starting or finding someone to start off; its all there when u need it; just keep it charged, even tho it lasts months..
