lifters are guming up, try an oil flush and a good quality oil.if its still there you'l need new lifters

try not driving it like a girl. the hla's (lifters) need a good pump up fairly regularly specially when they are gettin on.
when i changed my cam i pulled the hla's out and stripped them down cleaned them out with the roller racks, rockers and rollers and replaced the bakerlite clips. started it at first it sounded like someone threw a handfull of bolts into my rocker cover but it goes away when they pump back up. if that doesn't work they need shimming out as buying new ones will be a gross waste of money as it's the gap between the rocker and the valve stem thats gotten bigger not the lifter getting smaller. shims can be bought from fraud for a minimal cost. about 3/5's of phuk all if i remember correctly available in a few different sizes but if you don't know how to measure them up then you might aswell ask a blind man to do it.

once they get carbon in them they'll be noisy as, nothing you can do about.you could try cleaning them, there's a lifter repair kit available though motor traders, but you might as well get a change over set from an engine repairer, shouldnt cost u more than $190ish, versus $955 for a full set from ford

seeing as the noise is intermittent, its a fair chance that its not rocker ratio related

GeZza200 your ticking was from this pistons not having oil on them, but could be a range of things injectors, pistons, lifters, timing chain so on and so on. in my case turns out my clutch is screwed, but sounded like it was coming from the engine..
