hi all. im looking at upgrading the stereo in my EL. running on a little bit of a budget but im thinking of going with...

pioneer 460 watts 6X9 speakers for the parcel shelf
Pioneer HU with an iPod cable - obviously for the ipod
propably leave the factory door speakers in or maybe change them
600 watt 4 channel Pioneer amp

what are your views on this setup and where could i go better?

any advice would be much apreciated, thanks.

my opinion, front speakers are a whole lot more important then the rears, try to find some good front splits and just a decent pair of rear speakers.

what do you want?

a nice sound quality system or something thats thumps with bass. or something better than stock?

if you want better than stock, then yeah, that'll proly be fine.

if you just want lots of bass, big sub and big amp, better head unit.

if you want it to actually sound good (showing my bias a bit there  ) then it will take a bit more thought.

splits are usually used in the front and have a satellite tweeter that you mount independently of the woofer. They usually have better sound quality than a 2-way or dual cone speaker.

front are usually better to upgrade for sq as they carry the treble that you will be hearing in the front.

do yourself a favour and go to the tech docos section (look up) and read pyroay's tutes on stereo gear.

yeh i want something that has a nice sound quality when you turn it up and also has a nice amount of bass. not r+b type bass, just for rock and metal music. should i put spits in or just get some good quality front speakers?

ahh rock and metal music, i like your taste!!

splits will give you that nice crystal clear guitar, where you can here every single note as clear as a bell.

a sub will help it to give a bit of extra kick with the bass kickers.

i built my system with SQ in mind. (see my sig)

i would recommend splits, but without knowing your budget its hard to know exactly what your working with.

and keep in mind a good quality pair of 3 way speakers properly installed will sound better than a cheapo set of splits nstalled badly. like i said, read pyroays tutes, very very handy.

im glad we agree with what music is the best :D . im looking for a setup that gives me the best sq out of about $500 - $700.

im only in year 12 and thats all i can really afford to indulge out of my remaining funds.

ive already paid for the car, just the finer points are left. i checked out your install last week; pretty nice!

went looking for pyroays post last night and couldnt find it. oh well.

Don't worry mate, we're all idiots once in a while :P.

It'll be hard to work something good for your budget. But decent splits probably set you back $200 - 250 (depends where you get them from) and then a 4 channel amp maybe $300 - 400. That's already about $500 - 650. Not much else you can do with the Head unit.

If it was me, I'd get a good head unit first, maybe spend $350 or more. Then wait and save until I could afford a decent set of splits, an amp and also the wiring kit to go with it.

But I am no expert in prices so don't quote me on those figures. I haven't had a look at audio stuff for a while now so I'm not sure where the market is at.

Just to give you an idea. I spent $500 on a head unit, then got a some wiring stuff for $150, my 2 amps set me back about $800 - 900 (got them on sale) and then my speakers. My speakers are crappy though...front I have lower series Blaupunkt splits which seem to do the job, rear are 8" pioneer 3 ways and Pioneer 10" free-air subs in the boot. All installed by myself so I save heaps of money on that. All this was over a period of 2 years though, so don't expect to get the best instantly if you don't have the money.

I am upgrading my system but not anytime soon.

phong =P~
