Oh happy happy joy o joy I have a 97 EL stationwagon and I tried to open the driver's side rear door and not a lot happens .It won't open from the outside or the inside ,I get noises near the lock when I try the handles .I figure I have to get the trim off which appears difficult,if not almost impossible without damaging it.So is there a way to get to the lock from where the inside handle is or do I bite the bullet and rip the trim off.Any suggestions /advice would be welcome.I would hazard a guess that this has happened to someone else before.Thank you in anticipation.Kev

no mate I had the opposite. door wasn't locking at all. turned out to be corrosion in the loom connector from the door to the body. I found it after stripping the door down and cleaning out the lock actuator and it still didn't work. been perfect ever since for the last 4 years.

Maybe the actuator has failed and you have the child lock on?
If so I see no option but to remove the trims... |

I was looking at how you might do this with my doors apart yesterday.
you must have child lock on. perhaps you can get a bit of coathanger into the door gap and fick the child lock switch up? I think you will be able to open it then. If no then you have a stuffed lock and you have a hard time trying to sort it. when I got my damaged car one of the locks was stuffed,, I think it was stolen and forced. I had a hard time getting it opened but I pushed it pretty hard.

I'd say, the door handle has probably become unclipped from the metal rod inside the door. You'll have to take the door trim off to get to it. There should also be a metal plate behind the door handle that will be a complete pain. To remove it, you'll have to drill out the rivets. Then you'll be able to see if the door handle is connected up properly
As for both handles not working, my mate has the same problem on his NL Fairlane. He had the childproof lock on, and the outside doorhandle stopped working.

Ah happy days I finally got time to have a look at the door and it actually opened without removing the door trim .But what I did find was the childlock was on a little bit and the outer handle wouldn't open the door.So I removed the door trim and the metal plate covering the lock and found that the outer handle did not have enough pull/leverage to open .So after some investigation I found a plastic clip to the rear of the handle which has a rod which attaches to the lock, undo the clip using a screwdriver and move the rod down a couple of mm and .do the clip up and the door handle started working but not every time so Imoved the rod another 3/4 mm and it works perfectly,THANKS for all your replies and advice Kevman.
