It all started, when I would have the steering wheel on almost full lock, both left and right, I would hear this noise, hard to explain, like a *ccssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhh* (only way I could think how to explain) it wasn't overly loud, but definitely audible... Anyways, this morning when pulling out my driveway, the sound doesn't exist anymore, its just very hard steering when moving slowly... So I'm guessing its manual steering and not power..
Could someone please explain the cause? Will it simply be putting in some more fluid, or are these symptoms of needing a new rack...or? Any advice would be greatly appreciated |

The noise i think you're on about is the sound power steering makes when there's a leak. Have you checked your reservoir? If there's no fluid in there it's gone and leaked out somewhere. Follow the lines back and look for any leaks. It might help to top up the reservoir and have someone else move the wheels with car idling. This makes it easier tosee where the fluid is leaking from.
If you still have fluid it could be that your pump is gone.

The noise you could hear is normal and just a pressure release as the steering has no more movement left in it. All hydraulically powered steering does it.
The fact that you no longer have any power assistance or the noise indicates a problem.... (obviously)..... Have you checked your power steering fluid level?? Otherwise, I would just let a mechanic check it out.....

Yeah I think everyones E car does it. It's a noise that makes you cringe when you hear it.
My power steering pump is slowly dying too. I too had no power steering on startup this morning. Worse when it's cold in the morning. I have plenty of fluid, I think I have a couple of broken vanes in the pump. I was quoted around $130-150 to fix it. |

ok ok ok
i've delt with these problems heaps of times before that noise you're hearing is normal its just lack of steering fluid getting to the steering rack is completely normal and it also means that the steering pump is working fine
