I have an EF 6cyl wagon which has developed a problem.
Car started perfectly, running sweet at 70 kmh when zap.... engine cut out, dashboard display & clock went off. Rolled to a stop, turned the key and she started again. Drove home with no more trouble and thought no worries, I've just received my super duper code reader from Muzza so I'll soon fix it. The reader came up with no faults. I thought it must have been just one of those mysteries that happen and it wouldn't happen again. WRONG! Today whilst manoeuvring in the carpark she died again. When I started it again I noticed the clock had gone from 4pm to 1.30pm! Sorry to gabble on but I don't know where to look. Help needed. Cheers |

check your battery's terminals and give them a good clean...
off the batt, i think there are 3 fusable links, check their condition and repair if needed. see how you go.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check the battery connections & everything tomorrow but how do I check the ECU? If that had caused it wouldn't it have shown a code on my code reader?
The big worry is when I next drive the car will it cut out in a dangerous place. eg railway crossing!!! |

should be main electric fault , cause even if you puled the ecu with ing on the clock and dash lights etc wouldnt give up, your losing all power, if it is a battery conection it shouldnt turn over, under the most load at start, more like the main fusiable link

Wheres about in Hobart are you Tas Ed? I'm sure the Tassie members here would love to help you out. it sounds like you have a earthing problem as mention by xfpaul. only way to find the fault is through a elimination process. that means cleaning all you electrical contacts... cold weather & condensation remember?
I could be wrong but worth all of us being there! LOL

also check the ignition tail, this could also be faulty they become loose after time, seperate and not work correctly, another thing to look at is the BEM, connection may be dodgy..

Today is the big day! I've cleaned all battery & earth connections and swapped the fusible links for known good ones.
I'm off for a test drive now so if it cuts out again I'll swap all the relays over. Thanks for all advice & offers of help. If you see a white haired grumpy old man standing by a white wagon broken down in Old Beach please stop & say Hi. |

Just to let you know the problem appears to be fixed. Don't know if it was the battery, dodgy earth or fusible link . Thanx for all suggestions.
