Just wondering what temperature the EL XR8 thermostat fully opens?
Would it be alright to replace it with a 160oF (71oC) one at the same time i install my underdrive pulleys? To counteract the slight increase in temperature the car will be running at? Just a thought. And besides, i think the EL V8 thermostats fully open at a high temp anyway dont they? Cheers. |

This is straight off the Pro-M website...
2. The ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor and the thermostat are very important. The computer doesn’t give you full performance until the engine coolant is above 190 deg. F. Low temperature thermostats will put your car in a starting mode when you really want to be in a full warmed up and honest-to-Pete-running mode. Shane

I have a busted thermostat in my 6cyl and basically all it does is restrict flow because its always open. The temp never gets above the 'L' on "normal' and the car has beasty power for stock internals.
In Perth street Car mag they put in a lower temp thermostat in a BA XR8 or GT (can't remember) and it gave a 2kw increase and a better torque graph. I think more proof is needed either way. |

160 maybe alittle low but 180 or so would be closer..Depends on what cold start clicks in/ out at? Or it will have bad emissions and fuel consumption..The cat will run hotter too, burning off unused fuel...

If the car's running cold, it'll be dumping more fuel into the car (thinking it's cold) which will cause it to run rich, which in turn loses performance.

I have the underdrive pulleys on my EL V8 and there is no difference in its operating temperature. I wouldn't worry about playing with the thermostat.

This could explain my ordinary fuel consumption. I've been chewing around 20-22L/100 with lots of very calm driving. I think I might need to put a warmer thermostat in mine.. I'm running the EF thermo fans full time (haven't built a controller for them yet). It keeps the needle just below the N (this is the first letter after the blue section for those who arent familiar with the EB/ED mid series cluster). I'm assuming thats close to being cold enough for coldstart enrichment compensation
For those with EB/ED mid series.. where does ur dial sit?
