I spoke to a fella at the local wreckers this afternoon who says he has an AU bottom end lying around ready for a rebuild - it's to go with a CMS Stage 4 AU Tickford XR6 VCT head.

Can anyone confirm that I'll need the following parts:
water pump
harmonic balancer (replace this or just reuse the original?).
oil pump (replace this or just reuse the original?)
sump gasket kit.
timing cover gasket kit.
rear main seal.
timing chain, guides and tensioner (replace this or just reuse the original?)
5 x 40mm brass welsh plugs
headgasket and 14 headbolts.
+bearings, pinstons and rings.

anything else? so that means I need to make sure to get the block, sump, crank and piston rods from him then (I got the feeling it might of already have been pulled apart)?

I'm trying to work out what pistons, bearings and rings to get - looking at ACL Race Series.

with the con rod and main bearing sets, there's an X model which has a +0.001" extra oil clearance, and thinner max wall at Crown - any ideas which to get - the normal or X (see http://www.aclperformance.com.au/FordL6 ... arings.htm )?

These are the pistons I'm looking at http://www.aclperformance.com.au/Ford4. ... istons.htm .

And with the bearings and piston sizes - just get standard or do I need to see what the engine builder wants based on the condition of the bottom end?

Looks like you have all the necessary parts listed. I think it's better to put a new oil pump in when doing a motor rebuild. It's one of those things that are a nuisance to replace later if you lose oil pressure. What are you doing with the alternator bracket? Are you going to use EF or EL accessories on the engine?

Are you getting the bottom end balanced and blueprinted? Perhaps get a machine shop or engine builder to assemble the bottom end. They'll inspect the parts for any damage/failure and look at the tolerances as well.

Burson's say they can supply a performance rebuild kit (pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets) which is a good as the ACL Race Series for about $900. I don't know what brand it is though.

Yeah I work casual at a local Repco on the weekend, so getting the parts is no drama, I've got an engine shop whose putting it together for me.

As for the alternator, PS and aircon, I'm still trying to find out what to do - EF or AU.
