after reading the rebuild guide pdf thats been floating about done by Jmm, they say right at the end that silicon around the exhaust ports is enough, rather than putting on a gasket.. They also say just silicon improves performance and economy.

Is this true? Does an exhaust gasket interfere with flow or cause turbulence.

like to hear ppls opinions.

i doubt silicon would last with the temperatures exhaust manifolds generate. :?

i think exhaust gaskets do the job fine.

dont you NEED a gasket since their 2 different types of metal? and LOL @ jmm saying silicone adds performance.

Seems that anything JMM says adds performance...

I suggest you use a gasket. The silicon cannot really give performance since the purpose of having a gasket or in JMMs case, silicon, is to stop any exhaust leaks going into the engine bay...

So stick to the exhaust gasket.

I use a MLS gasket, its great for cutting your fingers when removing plug leads!

I can only assume JMM suggests silicone for 2 reasons.

1: Each port has 2 bolts so with well made extractors with a flush finish there should be no leak with only silicone (many shops only use silicone)
2: You reduce the gap between the port and extractor which would enable better flow.

Throw a gasket on, they seal, and looks clean.

you can always cut the gasket to the size of the port.. then you get the bonus of better perforance, and a leak free seal :)

sheesh with the prices of some shops, I'd say silicone em up mate!

also its pretty hard to cut something thats not there! usually the gasket holes are around 5% larger!

depends what gaskets you use, if the head is heavily ported etc...

ill take the extra 15min labour to not have to pull them back off again next week.

I've only ever seen race boats and cars with silicon instead of gaskets.

the main reason they use silicon is ease for when they have to remove the engine for repairs etc.

i use silicon on the exhaust gasket to make it seal better,but would never use just silicon as it will get holes blown in it.

and unless the flanges are machined perfecty the silicon won't work for very long.
