what a prick of a job!
my timing cover gasket is leaking and have lost my licence, so ive got myself into gear and started to do something about it.
motor is still in the car, the gregory's manual can be confusing but im getting there. worked on it for 3 hours but all i got off is the plenum and rocker cover pretty much.
any helpful tips from anyone would be the best.

I recently took one off a dud motor but haven't put one on. You can whip the belts and brackets off by all means, but be patient when you get to the cover itself. I remember having to unclip a tensioner from the chain to finally release it. Don't drop anything in there. Make sure you understand how the chain tensioner works to get it all back together properly. I would be tempted to see if i could just release the cover enough to squeeze some silicone in . . . but i think that would be a stupid way to go. I hope you get some responses from people more experienced, or maybe if you strike a problem.

is it neccessary to have it a tdc? how do i turn the motor by hand?

Your best to have it at tdc, but not necessary.
Rotating the engine whilst head is on with cam and no chain is a no-no.

Thats a long way to fix the timing cover seal.
Removing the timing cover is also a time consuming job, but far better than removing the head.


Timing Cover:
Doesn't matter what position the gearing is in just cable tie it so it doesn't move (not likey as the gears aren't removed...just a safety measure).

However It is advisable to do so, as it makes things more defined.

You need to remove the chain tensioner, harmonic balancer and also loosen the sump.
completely remove about 5 bolts from the front back on each side of the sump.

You have to lower the cover, and lever it out as the head is attached and the cover is on 2 dowels. the sump seals around the cover and is compressed around the crank seal.

it is the gasket that sits on the front of the head gasket were it leaks mine leaks but nothing a degreese doesn't fix every now and then.

i only have the rocker cover off on the motor havnt touched the rocker gear can i still get it to tdc?
i thought i may aswell do the head gasket while im at just to be sure.
anything else i can give a freshen up because i wont be driving it for another month or so.i emailed wade about a regrind cam just looking for some mild as its on gas.
