are instrument clusters 6cyl/v8 specific?
long story: i have a 5.0 eb with 87000km on the clock. it is however a gl so speed, temp and fuel guages only. being low km i don't want to just bolt in a mid/high series cluster as i'll lose my km's. i recently put a new cluster in my mother in law's eb fairmont due to the common issue with the odometer gear. (couldn't be bothered stuffing around replacing it like i did with mine). my query is, can i interchange my speedo section into the fairmont one and wire that cluster into my car. obviously i need a new oil pressure sender but is the tacho wiring incorporated into the loom or do i need to add wires to that also. will it even be possible to marry 2 clusters together to make one good one? i have a couple of spares so i guess i'll just go and play for a bit. cheers guys.

o.k. after fiddling around a bit, the parts are interchangeable. i can put my speedo workings into the mid series cluster no worries. all i need to know now is if there are any calibration issues with it being a 6cyl cluster going into a v8.

should be no calibration issues, both cars have same ratios in gear boxes and diff, besides these are controled by speedo gear, but you knew that.
there should be no issues on this front.

thanks dc, any idea if the tacho will work or do i need to add more wires ? also has a lot of other little warning lights on it that the base one doesn't have eg. low fuel, coolant etc. will these all work as well or not. doesn't bother me, as long as the guages all work.

Think the tacho will be out, they read their signal from the distributor if I remember correctly.

Tacho may be out,but Ford was lazy and used 1 wiring loom for all........so plug and go....except for tacho.....

well plugged it in and tacho doesn't work at all so obviously it needs another wire or two. also have light showing for low coolant as that wasn't a feature on the original cluster so obviously no wiring for that either. oh well. guess its back to the standard low series cluster for a bit longer. just thought i'd try seeing as how i had it there just sitting around.
i guess now that i know i can keep my km's by just swapping that part of the cluster, i could probably get an s pack or xr cluster to just plug and play a bit easier than a fairmont one. ... or is there a relatively easy way i can get this one working.

This tacho is specific to the V8 and 6. You can't swap them over.
This is only for the EA-ED, the EF/EL cluster will work on both. Cheers BenJ

i don't frequent fordmods as often as i used to and realised afterward that there was tech doco. all sorted now anyway. mid series cluster has stayed on the bench and low one in the car until such time as i could be bothered putting a mid one in. its auto so don't really need a tacho.
