depends on the type of knock..
tail shaft - id suspect it be felt thru the entire car, not heard only..
exhaust - make a hollow pipe noise or a clunk towards the rear of the car.
steering - no idea, feel it thru the steering wheel?
suspension - solid thud/clunk noise, thats my bet, get it looked at by a suspension joint or somone in the know..

sounds like a flogged bush or a loose nut in the suspension somewhere.

Yeah I have had that exact same problem for the past 2 years and it hasn't gotten any worse or louder. The only difference is it is more noticable when I first start driving. i.e; I find that when I either drive forward or reverse out of my driveway it will clunk for a few seconds then sort of stop if I drive a further 100 metres in either direction.

If you feel the knock through the steering wheel or under your feet its in the front end, the easiest thing to do is to check all your x member bolts & steering rack bolts, the older the car gets the more chance you'll find nuts & bolts lossening up, then move on from there.
