A very good start would be to read the sticky at the top of the page.
AU is good, but don't disregard the EL engines. 240 000 ks is not a lot of kilometres. Mine got to over 400 000 ks before it needed replacing. Unless there is actually something wrong with you engine, I would suggest you look at keeping it going. BenJ

sorry man didnt see that sticky. theres nothing wrong with the engine at all, but i thought it would be point less to spend all my money on this engine when eventually it would need to be ripped out, i may aswell get a new engine and build that cause it will last longer, and i wont have to do everything twice

what are you going to do to the engine ?
if your motor is running well - stick a cam in it, extractors/exhaust and some sort of intake mod (snorkel/filter or even BBM conversion) "should" see ~120-140 rwkw. If you are going to go further Head Porting so on, then i would get an AU motor and start from there. |

I agree. If your intention is to build up an engine as performance project, than you should begin with an AU engine as a base.
It has a much stronger bottom end and is smoother. BenJ

If you are building yourself up a performance engine, and plan to get some head work done etc, there is no need to start with and XR6 engine.
You may as well start with a std engine as they are cheaper to source. The blocks are the same with the differences being in the head, cam, fuel pressure reg and ECU. As for sourcing engines, you will need to hunt around your local area, as freight would be a killer. BenJ

Ferntree gully auto salvage will be almost a certainty to have an AU motor, they are site sponsors, give them a pm or call. Ive found them to get back to every query Ive ever sent even if they dont have the part Im after.
good service.

Many Wreckers have AU motors - you can get std AU motors for around $400
XR AU's non VCT usually got for at least 800, VCT usually more. better off getting the std block as has been said and getting work done to it. N/A the AU block is more than capable so a low K item is a must. |

It has a much stronger bottom end and is smoother. BenJ id say that is a major overstatement i think std AU rods would be weaker than the shorter EL rods... although i would expect the AU to be slightly smoother due to the redesigned crank... the disadvantage is the AU sump will need modding and so will some of the wiring...

ok, i got quoted $700 for engine with about 110,000k'z on clock, $550 for transmission, and i know the ecu needs to be changed but i 4got to ask how much, or if they had it(they should).
do use know what else im gonna need to do to get this thing in and running? |
