Hey guys,
I am going to be doing a manual conversion in the coming weeks, (after exams ) and am chasing all the little bits and pieces at the moment. I have hit a hurdle with the throwout bearing though, its damn expensive!! The quotes i have range between $70 and $140. Am i able to buy this bearing at a bearing store? Does anyone have the dimension i'll need to ask for it? I dont have one, so i cant take it in to get them to have a look. I highly doubt that they'll know what one is. Does anyone know of anywhere cheaper to buy one? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Nic |

I bought a genuine Ford one for I think $40
Are you sure they're not quoting you for the throwout fork.? I know the fork and dampener is around $120.

hrmm... ford was the $140 quote. i might go in there and see them sometime later in the week. make sure it was the right thing

nicco, that sounds about right. I got quoted 60 - 140. I got mine from hightek brakes delivered. I think prices have gone up though for some reason.
brake and clutch places usually have to part a kit to sell the bearing seperately. Hence the high prices. phong =P~

Buying clutch plates and throw out bearings is becoming a joke. The companies have started increasing the cost prices on these now to push people to buy the full clutch kit rather.

hrmm... i did a bit more ringing around and spoke to a mate in a bearing store, he can do it for me at $60 trade. i reckon i'll have to go with that.
but yeah, its all hideously expensive! a whole clutch kit is only around $275 anyway thanks for that guys |

You should be fitting a new clutch kit IMO (which normally includes TO bearing) - that is unless you already have a new clutch plate and pressure plate to go without the TO bearing.

I installed a new clutch plate and pressure plate as well as a new TO bearing...but it died and now squeals like a mofo ...cbfed fixing it even though I have a spear TO bearing sitting here. Not a good idea, but it'll come out soon. phong =P~

to be honest, the conversion will be sent later this week. so i havent actually seen the condition of the clutch yet, i just know its used. I'd prefer to not have to buy a whole clutch kit though. an extra $300 will definitely break the bank! but if its no good then i will go down that route. phong, do you know why your TO bearing died? just curious if there is anything i need to look out for while installing |

I've pulled the box out 3 times before and didn't replace the TO bearing and it was all good. Replaced it with a new one and the thing squeals like a mofo. I have found recently though that the box had a thin layer of oil underneath it, so I think a leaking transmission may have caused premature wear of the TO bearing if at all possible. If I remember correctly, the TO bearing wasn't a genuine ford either...got another one that is genuine ford and when I replace it I hope it will last longer phong =P~
