I'm on the hunt for a metal cracking noise that appears to come from my right-rear suspension (BA XR8). It's been in for $600 worth of analysis at a Ford Dealer and they can't find it. I've got a list of all the things they've done.

But the big problem is that while it is loud and reproduceable on the road at initial take-off in either forward or reverse directions, it can't be reproduced on the hoist, so they are struggling to pinpoint it.

I've been considering the steelman chassis ears (http://www.automotive-diagnostic-tools. ... 02-ast.htm), which lets you locate wireless microphones around the car so you can listen in with a custom box.

But is there a DIY way? I'm considering building a few $10 Wireless FM transmitters from Jaycar and setting the FM2 presets to pick them up individually.

Does anyone have access to or have used any sort of Chassis Ears? I'd be interested in your experience with them, and some detailed pictures of the microphone components.

I know Rotunda resell something of this sort as well for Ford Dealers, but I don't know if they are a different tool or just rebadged Steelman tools.
