Gday im about to buy a EF XR6 LSD and im getting it with the handbrake cable or the assembly or somthing. What has to be done with the EF diff and the handbrake to make it fit my EL?

Also i have read that the trailing arms are different on the EL will mine still work with the car or will i have the old EF handling problem if i use the EF Diff?

Cheers

You need the upper arms. Yours will not do.
You'll need the rear hand brake cable assembly.
You may need the watts link arms too.

$50 should buy all that!

Nothing wrong with EF XR diff's!
EL's just have better provison with load centre, more easily avaliable upper arms.

supposedly (i say that cause i haven't driven both) that the back end of the EF is a bit slower to react, but then roll oversteers, making the car feel a bit more nervous.

you can notice it a bit when pushing really hard, but i would like to drive an EL with the same suspension as mine for a back to back.

if you swap everything over (ctrl arms, watts links etc.) then yes it will gain this EF trait

EF XR diffs also have the lower watts linkage mounting point. This was then carried on to all EL diffs.

Yes, you will need the EF upper control arms.

Ideally, sourcing an EL diff would be the preferred option as the upper control arm brackets have better mounting options when lowering your car. Of course if you lower your car you will need the XR upper control arms which are unique to the EL XRs.

There is nothing wrong with using the EF XR diff. I have one in my EB and it is great.

Cheers

There's nothing too difficult to do. As Krytox said use the EF upper arms to start with.
The Watts link arms should be fine, your Futura should have the lower locating pin position on the diff rear cover plate [my 98 EL Futura has].
You should be able to transfer that cover to the EF housing if necessary. If it's a late EF diff it may already have the Watts pin in the lower position on the rear cover.
It's that lower pin position that tightened up the EL rear end somewhat.
There are some slight differences with the rear handbrake cable mountings on the diff. housing but if if you get the EF one with the purchase you can choose which one you'll use.
BenJ fitted an EF XR6 diff to his EB2 and we put an ELXR6 diff assembly on my EB2, complete with EL handbrake setup. No real problems just matching the upper arms for the correct diff pinion angle on the lowered cars.
If we could muddle through that, you should breeze through fitting an EF diff to an EL. LOL
Cheers,
Paul

ok thx for the replys, my car has already been lowered so all i will need is the EF XR upper arms and the handbrake assembly? And i can swap the cover off my EL Diff to EF and that should fix the watts link arm position

You may find that the EF XR6 diff already has the lower watts link pin.

My one does. Just check it first before making extra work for yourself.

oh really so if it does, then can i just do a straight swap and only have to worry about the handbrake?

Yes, I believe that to be correct.

Me EF diff had small metal brackets bolted to the top of the diff centre for the EF handbrake, but I believe the EL handbrake cable is routed through a casting on the diff hat itself. This casting is there on my EF XR diff.

You could always swap the diff hat over and improvise the hand brake cable.

The major difference is the upper mounting tabs.

EF XR upper arms had adaptors on the chassis rail which lowered and altered the swing. These are harder to find than EL XR arms.
