I know it sounds basic, but check the airfilter, it could be blocked up pretty bad, the standard filters lose effeciency pretty easily. Also check the throttle body and see how black it is (take the induction pipe off, and use a clean bit of rag)

These are a start, and could yield more effortless power, if they're all perfect, have a look at the color of your oil, if its black that'll influence the economy aswell.

How many K's has it done? it could be worth having the auto serviced (or if its a manual you can drop the fuild) and gearbox oil changed. These are worth doing anyway, but not essential.. My car loves me now that it's running redline (and microglide)

If you find everything seems to be in good condition then it could well be the oxygen sensor as previously mentioned. It's just worth checking a few things out to pinpoint your problem.

Also press the trip button on your dash until you get to instant fuel consumption (L/100km) And see how the consumption changes as your driving under different conditions, it actually uses less fuel in lower gears in most cases..
Maybe push the gearstick over to performance mode (dont push up or down, just across) and it will hold gears a little longer, and won't change to overdrive. You can easily pull back when you get onto the freeway to engage overdrive, but it's usually a bit better around town.

Now that my car's manual i vary between 400km and 600 km (sometimes more..) But I thrash it everywhere i go, so I get 12-13L/100km If I took it easy (or my girlfriend drove more) I could easily get 700+km I do drive on the freeway a bit tho.

Hope this helps

The only time I see 12-13L/100km is when I'm driving over mountains and hills. mostly on 2 & 3rd gear. the occasional bouncing off the ???line on first during those sharp steep bends. :P

And that's driving on the limit too! I brake late and reach the speed limit faster on tip-tronic. when I reach level ground and just cruising, it will lower the instant fuel consumption read out. I actually leave it on there so I'm constantly monitoring my litres per 100K's.
