My I6 uses a standard belt - I keep a new one in the boot, FFS why can't you?

Oh yes, i was only talking generally.

There would be a way to do it.. like using a belt just for the supercharger and a tensioner that could be switched on or off electronically.. then the belt could just go loose on command.... not as tidy as the clutch setup though..

just means I will chew up some juice/power spinning a supercharger I'm not using at idle...

Yowie, a slipping belt doesn't sound viable to me, although i think this is done in some manner for the drive of ride on mowers, different belt type though.

There would surely be something readily available that would do the job? Or maybe the springs etc in the a/c clutch could be uprated?
There are also centrifugal clutches, these might be fitted to postie bikes, the spring tensions are tuned to lock-up the clutch at around the right rpm.


Yes. By my thinking . . .

The blower will still be flowing air at idle, particularly if it's a positive displacement type, and this will cause extra air friction and bearing friction, while ultimately not providing a benefit.

It's not providing a benefit because due to the higher inlet air pressure the ISC simply won't be open as much, reducing the pressure and fuel to stock levels, and stock idle speed.

Or, the ISC will be closed, yet this won't be enough, and the idle speed and fuel use will be higher than stock.

mine is off a mustang and these are off holdens but at the end of the day they do the same job.. $400 bucks and there are 8 of them.

A Holden Surburban fan belt used to spin an M90 supercharger off a Mustang now bolted to a EL falcon engine and tensioned using the factory tensioner and the EA air con one with some mods.. worked out rather well actually.

I can see why this didn't work out Frank. The Taurus sold here had a 3.0L DOHC engine not the 3.8 used in the previous model as per that link. I think the one sold here was current from late 94 to about 97. I remember seeing a pic of a '98 which was drastically restyled (kinda like BA v's AU) and a much better looking car. Probably would have sold alright here...
