Im doing the bearings in my whiny ef 3.45 lsd and want to know how to set pinion preload?
I was planning on getting a new collapsable spacer and using the same shim.

The collapsable spacer will set the preload for you but you need to be able to tighten it enough. I ended up reusing the original and checking with a fishing scale it was within spec.

^^^^ True the collaspable spacer will ensure u do not over tension it putting more load on the cone bearing than needed but one thing to do is tension the yoke and nut onto the housing and then spin it while giving the pinion a few good louses with a timber drift downwards to seat the cone and the cup bearing properly then retension up the nut to spec.

Thanks alot for the replies,what was the torque or weight setting on the fishing scale to check preload?
My manual says 1.4-2.4 nm with a new seal and bearings but im not buying a 1/4 inch torque wrench for this one job.

you mght be able to find a conversion chart to convert from nM to foot/pounds but i thought it was more than 1.4 nM but happy to be wrong

What was the reading on the fishing scale,it would have been in grams or kilograms. The only specs i have are for nm,which you need to have a small torque wrench to check.

I found out today that you cant buy nm spring scales anymore,but you can get grams.
Apparently 98 grams equates out to 1 newton of force on a spring scale. So its all good and im off to the tackle shop Thanks again for the replies.
