I have a Sidchrome strap type and a Bulgarian arm :) Always remember to check the old oil seal is removed from the block. Lightly lube the new filter o-ring.

I use a 3 jaw universal wrench like this one. Cost about $20 and works really well with a long 3/8 ext bar. Don't even need to put the car on ramps to change filter, just turn the front left wheel to full lock and you can get at it.

How tight do you guys do up the filter? When I put mine on, I put it hand tight as tight as possible. After 5000km I can take it off with my hand...takes several tries but after a while it just comes loose...
 Haven't resorted to a oil filter remover on the EL yet.

Haven't resorted to a oil filter remover on the EL yet.phong =P~ i always only do it up hand tight too... its on customer cars where the tool definately comes in handy lol. i did a service on a 1990 F150 with an EFI 351W the other week, it took me and the boss about an hour to get it off lol. we finally got it off after trying so hard we bent the filter almost 90 degrees lol, turns out when it was put on, whoever did it didnt put oil on the O-ring.

i do my filters up as tight as one hand can do it..
but i use the tool to remove the filter as the engine is usually warm or hot when i drain the oil out... |

yea i had all sorts of issues with teh ef toight as hell. got it on the pits uad to us ea stupid strap type filter removal tool. But i install a K&n oil filter as it has a nut on the end so any shifter or spanner can remove it. it was $25ish a bit more thana normal one.

I think who ever put his oil filter on done it to tight. isnt it only meant to be hand tight? or tight enough so ti wont come off? i changed mine a few weeks ago and i un done it with my hands...

I always stab a screwdriver through the lowest piont of the filter, then position my bucket under the flow until it stops running.
Then i poke the screwdriver back in and use it as a lever to undo the filter. When you put the new one on, clean the mating surfaces with a rag then wipe a little oil on the rubber seal. Half fill it with oil, if you put more than half it will run out when you tip the filter, then screw it on, as tight as you can with one hand. |
