Will a wagon tailshaft fit my ED SEDAN? ok if the alloy tailshaft was damaged, ford will quote around $1000 to replace new,so you buy a cheap steel one,$100-300 bucks, long wheel base cars get alloy shafts for a easy fix to a lot of problems, unis, flex, drive angles, weight and length, and cheaper than a 2 piece shaft.measure your tail shaft from the centre of both uni joints and thats the length you need, then put new unis in and your gear box drive yoke, the you will need to rebalance the whole lot and see if the shaft is straight, might pay to change the white metal bearing and seal, also check the yoke for wear-inside and out,if its loose it will vibrate and transmitt to the shaft.[/quote]
If some xr's don't have an alloy tailshaft then I would assume that at some point someone's taken it out and put a steel one in it and used the alloy shaft for some project. But it is to my understanding that by standard out the factory the xr's had the alloy shaft. Thats basically what I'm going to do, I have a noob question to the bottom of all that . Whats the white metal bearing and seal? what's that for and where abouts is it on the tailshaft? And if there is wear on the yoke on the outside, wouldn't there be any wear on that part at all if I get it brand new?

the rear gearbox extension, where the tail shaft slides in to has a oil seal that runs on the yoke to keep the oil in the box, behind the seal is the bearing to locate and hold the yoke steady, the yoke is about 170-190mm long and spins and slides in and out of the gearbox as you drive,as the car diff moves back and forward,up and down.if you want some fun,get a broom get someone to hold one end-gear box,get the other end and swing it around,no more than a 300mm circle and up and down---thats the diff, now you can see the work the box does--it also goes in and out aswell at the same time,so the unis get a real hard time,at standard road height-------lowered it gets worse,if not set up well, try ftg salvage for a tail shaft--site sponsor, specialise in xrs,btw i have a kevlair shaft and alloy shafts for my chaser, the kevlair is hard to find,s.a and n.t. may be w.a and qld.,i dont know how many where sold and shipped to n.t. and traded or wrecked.
