when they say i have blown my head whats gone? is it just the head gasket or does my head warp. because i have put a new engine in my ef and have the old one sitting there, and was thinking if theres nothing wrong with the old head, i should get it ported and do some head work to that instead of takeing my car off the road to do it all.

cheers

usually a blown head is the head gasket has gone bye bye

OR there are cases where there is corrosion in the head itself and this goes past the head gasket seal and it can "blow" this way

only way to tell is to pull the head off and look at it

i bet anything the coolant galleries will need to be welded up and re drilled and the head shaved

No matter what, if you plan on taking a head off, it is better to get the head reshaven/straightened. You don't want to put a head on that "looks" good and find out it is minutely warped causing premature head gasket failure. That's my opinion anyway.
