Hello, my mum owns a Ford Festiva (1999 model, GLXI) and its got around 193,000km on it, only serviced a few times and in a bad condition, its a 5sp manual and some times the gears refuse to 'go in'. You clutch and then go to push it into a gear, it won't go in, it happens with all the gears but other times it wont happen at all in any and goes in perfectly fine, i'm guessing it needs more oil in the gearbox (Or its a more serious problem and it needs rebuilding?). What oil would i buy for it and how would i put it in?

Also, how would you change an oil filter on one of these? I don't have much auto experience at all, is the oil filter easy to change or should i leave it up to the dealers?

Thanks very much.

could be the input shaft playing up? or the clutch needs replacing... quite a few things it could be.

Its been doing it for around 40,000km. Its totally random when it strikes. Also it doesn't happen in reverse and pumping the clutch a few times usualy makes it go in.

How much would a new clutch + installation cost as a rough figure?

Is that something your average joe could do? Or would i need to take out the engine and so forth to get to it?

Thanks very much in advance.

festiva should have a cable clutch, you chould have about 3-5mm of pedal free play.

the box should have dex3 ATF in it.

check whats in it and what the fluid is like

ou fill up a festiva man box by the speedo drive. Disconnect speedo cable, undo 10mm bolt and slip out speedo drive unit.
Is the engine 1.3 or 1.5???
The clutch is cable operated, and if it has 193K on it, & hasn't had a clutch replaced before, it's probably stuffed.
The oil for them is 15w40, and a Ryco Z79A oil filter will fit.

Car is in getting serviced, so far its going to cost $2700, bushes and brushes are all screwed, aircon needs re-gassing and LOTS of other problems, still haven't looked at the gearbox yet.

Will be an interesting figure, i'm trying to convince mum and dad to sell it off cheap and i'll spend my own money to buy a car and let mum drive it daily. Its a win-win situation, i get my first car, mum gets a better car to drive around.
