Having owned both (I had an XD not XF), I can say that they can't be compared. They are two different animals, like comparing a volkswagon to a commodore (I know both are s**t) But personally, I loved my old xd and wouldn't trade the experience of owning that car for anything. Like has been said before, they are simple and cheap to repair and you will learn a lot from owning one (especially external door handles ). As for my EF, what a friggin lemon, it would be easier to list the parts I didn't have to replace on this money pit.
Looked Ok but was a stock Gli. In it's defence, when it was drivable and fully functioning, it was a pleasure to drive.
But they were both Fords in a long list of fords I have owned, So I say start from as early as you can get your hands on affordably (XD/XF) and build your way up through the series. Enjoy!

u used to have a ZJ Fairlane last year... cost me $200, all the power windows still worked too! it was a great car to cruise around in, although the auto was half f**k and the speedo was waaaaaaay out (someone replaced the original 351 with a 6... you could see 2 rectangular shaped paint fade marks about the size of a 351 head on the bonnet where the previous owner had cooked the engine...) it was a great car. then i got my $200 back when i sold it again
