Hey guys, i got an AU3 ute. And I'm noticing some backlash (i think it's excessive) through the drivetrain. I'm told its the diff and pretty normal in this car.
Has anyone else encountered this prob? Thought i'd ask before i try to fix it... |

What exactly is it doing? I had issues with stuff like that and found part of it was due to the one piece alloy tail shaft as well as the diff

what exactly is the ute if a auIII pursuit ute then i'd check the centre bearing as the pursuits had a 2 piece tailshaft. Other than that i was told it seems all au - bf falcons come with backlash in diff from factory. There aren't many with no backlash at all.

It's a XLS with 4.0L and 5 speed. You can feel it when you change direction (reverse to 1st or vice versa), when you start moving it gives a little clunk. Feels excessive to me, but I've only owned 2 ef sedans and a sigma before this car.

not sure if this is correct (if someone wants to clarify) but in 1st gear constantly jerk the throttle if you hear a clunking sound then its a fair bet your uni's are gone. Having said this BA's and AU's are very similar and mine has about a second or two before it engages reverse (auto) and a clunk is heard. I had it checked out and was told it wasn't anything to worry about as it pretty normal in AU's and BA's. Pretty much ws told to drive it until the diff gives up as its not worth the money you spend repairing it

I checked the drive shaft and it was fine. I also checked the diff oil, it was low, thin and of a brown colour. After i cleaned the crap out of the housing and the diff centre i replaced the oil with a heavy duty LSD oil and problem solved! No more clunking and the Limo is tight as!!! SWEET!
