Hi all. I am going to replace my automatic gearbox (which is dead) and wondered if anyone has fabricated a means of holding the box steady on a trolley jack during removal and replacement.
The car will be raised up on either ramps or axle stands. I have got two trolley jacks which may help. Unfortunately I'm not as strong as I used to be and unable to take the full weight with my bare hands. Any tips or ideas most welcome. Cheers! |

you will need it HIGH in order to get the transmission out on a jack thats for sure. I only had mine 45cm from the ground and had to drag the auto out on the ground.
but in terms of getting it stable, i used a thick large block of pine, its soft so when the gearbox lowers the teeth on the trolley jack just dug in. if you want it more stable could try carve out a bigger hole.

i always did mine with just a jack and a piece of wood.. if you unbolt the converter off the flexplate it makes lining everything back up a whole lot easier.

Pretty sure its just easier pulling the whole lot, engine and gearbox out together.
Never tried pulling the trans out on its own, only ever done the whole lot and it isnt that hard.

You will have to let the rear of the trans drop to get easy access to the top bell housing bolts. If you have an old slip yoke put it in the rear of the trans to stop fluid from leaking out when its lowered down. If you dont have one insert the driveshaft while the rear of the trans is lowered.
