Gday
I've got a little problem i've had for a month now and haven't been about to fix it. My El Fairmont Ghia 6 has intermittent spark. Only sparks say every 5 revolutions. Now i've replaced Dizzy Coil leads and plugs and its still doing it. The night before it stopped it seemed to be surging slightly then just before it stopped it surged as if someone was bunny hopping a manual. Now when i crank it over it cranks fine and motor coughs but doesn't start. timing is probly out but can't correct it coz the spark is intermittent. I've had problem with the computer trowing a low voltage error and it has caused me not being able to get 2nd or 3rd. i'm pretty sure it was the earth strap from the battery. So if anyone would possibly no a solution, i'd be grateful.

Since the motor stopped firing up i've replace the coil, dizzy, leads, plugs, alternator(last one was stuffed), earth strap.
The interior light doesn't stay on when cranking the motor over.

I'm kinda tilting towards the computer at this stage.

And would a El fairmont computer run a fairmont ghia??? Cause i've found it difficult to located a ghia computer atm, but i haven''t tired tooo hard lol.

it hasnt backfired while coughing has it? my EL had slightly similar problems, turned out to be the auxillary shaft.

my EA seems to have the same sounding problems, but it backfires majorly loud lol. it would be good if its the ECU because CFI ECUs are easy to locate :P

I dont think the Fairmont ECU would run as well in the Ghia, because the Ghia's have a Tickford driveline as opposed to the Fairmonts standard driveline.

oh and the ECU codes for EL Fairmont Ghia computers are:

6DJA
6DJB
and i think there is a 6DJC as well.

they are the same, just different build times. the updated ones might have some bugs removed or something but im not sure.

hope this helps.

yeah my ecu is 6DJB. Nah its not backfiring. Coughing back through the intake but thats because the timing is out. Once i get the spark fixed then i'll b able to fix the timing

Once i can get a computer i'll try it and hopefully its that.

ok tryed another ecu and no go. But i have discovered it has very weak spark.
I have replaced the coil dizzy(with new TFI) leads plugs.
I'm thinking i might have stuffed the tfi module again but cause when i went to start it i turned the ignition on and it wasn't plugged in. then i plugged it in without thinking on turning the ignition off.
Ummm any other ideas would b a help atm as i have rego in 2 weeks :(

this seems the same scenario with my car, and the mechanic has said its the distributor shaft from the engine itself, mine has shattered and sparks erratically. And he is quoting a new engine for me :( cheaper than stripping the front off the motor to fix.

Hope its not this for you

yep i'm pretty sure its that. the motor cranks, the fanbelt turns with stopping but the rotor button stops and starts so i've probly lost some teeth on the gear from the timing chain. not happy but atleast i know wat the problem is.
