I've got two questions...

First question...

I want to put a BA shifter mechanism into my EF so I have the little "tiptronic" type shifting... Who has done this or knows what would be involved?

I know it can be done and I'm 99% sure it's already been covered but I couldn't find it when I searched.

Second question...

Is there anyway to make the old EF 4spd respond a little faster when I "manually" change gears? I know there's no way to make it instantaneous short of spending mega dollars and somehow fitting a fully "manualised" auto.

But is there some little resistor mod or anything that I can do to increase the response a bit?

Thanks, Sam.

only way to improve the shifts is probably fresh fluid (I've always found that when the fluid gets older the shifts get slower) and a shift kit to get it to make the shifts quicker.

Yeh I just did the little shift kit thing. Dual stage... Lots of fun... I'll try giving the trans a service these uni holidays and see if it helps.

Cheers guys.

Simply dropping the pan and changing the filter will only give you about 4 litres of fresh fluid. They'll still be about 8 to 10 litres of old stuff in the box. Need to get it pumped out.

What i had done to my old (well...new, rebuilt) 93LE was install an AU S5 valve, which ramps up the line pressures to make the shifts a bit quicker and harder. I also had a modified billet 2nd/4th band servo (the big round thing on the side of the box lol) installed which made a massive difference to the drivability. It would almost change to the condition of your driving, it would change smooth (but firm) on light throttle, but open her up and it would upchange gears that would snap your neck. On certain occasions i could light up third with the shift, and that's not even using an electronic shift module

As for the BA shifter in my car, i really don't know much about the wiring that was done, it's my fault mainly as i don't ask enough questions  . There are only three wires needed for the shifter (another two for the backlight, so 5 all up), but oddly there have been four wires installed from the ECM that run to where the shifter will eventually be installed :? , i'll definately have to get onto that.

What about how the shifter is physically connected to the gearbox?

Do EF's have a rod instead of the cable that BA shifters need?

The BA shifter uses a cable which runs out infront of the unit into the engine bay and is anchored to the bellhousing on the passengers side of the gearbox obvioulsy by keeping the cable away from the exhaust. The selector arm is attached to an elongated selector shaft which sticks out through the park/neutral switch. And yes, EF's have a solid metal link between the shift handle and arm on the gearbox on the driver side.

But *smacks forehead* i could have retained the factory straight gate EL shifter and link as the selector shaft on the drivers side of the gearbox is the same as an E-Series. I just wouldn't have had the sequential manual feature, but i could have used buttons/paddles for that. Oh well, the things you think of at the last minute
