I've noticed that cats, at least the std cats fitted to falcons, are heavy. Where is the weight? Is it in the honeycomb? Or is the main pipe thick walled? I realise the heat shielding adds to the weight, but that's surely not the full story.

theres platinum in there, but no more than 0.25 of a gram

that s**t is real heavy, but dam expensive

theres probably more mild steel in there than you realise...

we can get $100 Ea from sims scrap at the moment. the outer housing on the cat is thick walled, around 2.5 - 3 mm to deal with the heat

Okay, so it's thick stainless steel, that's heavy.

I notice that the std exhaust manifold is damn heavy too.

My car will run mostly on lpg so i was thinking that changing to extractors, and if the honeycomb was heavy punch that out, would take considerable kilos off the front of the car. Plus, i would probably have to put another muffler right at the back of the car to bring the noise back down. Overall these would constitute a significant improvement to the weight distribution. But if the cat's weight isn't in the honeycomb, it's not worth removing the honeycomb.

If only i could replace the whole cat with a mild steel straight pipe (I wouldn't seriously consider non-cat if the car was run on petrol because of harmful emissions. I think so anyway).

At the moment rising scrap prices are good for people that buy wrecks and otherwise end up with valuable spare parts, but in time it will increase the cost of wrecks.

I almost got a wreck for $50 the other day, and even if i didn't use any parts (i would have) just having it sit there for a while with rising scrap prices it could have been a good investment.

With rising energy prices, scrap aluminium, in particular, is likely to rise in price, due to the large amount of energy to convert bauxite into aluminium.

I've got about three spare alloy heads, does anyone know how much for these? Is it better to remove the cam and valves etc? Or do they just melt out the alloy?

I picked up my cat again today and it's not really heavy. I think i overestimated because of having to wiggle it along and out from the underside of the car, whilst lying on the ground without much room.
