Want to upgrading the stock fairmont stereo, nothing to flash but something better. Maybe a JVC head unit with I-Pod, bluetooth and 4x50 (max) amp. Looking at tweeters in the A pillar moulding, two way 6" in the front doors and possibly some larger base speakers in the tail gate, is this a good combination of speakers, any suggestions on speakers or head units appreciated.

Replace the tailgate speakers with good ones but be carefull of going to big.
I did and the tailgate was too heavy and I kept getting bashed on the head by it even with new struts. Watch out for that damn lock catch, it hurts big time I have the bloddy scar to prove it. I ended up replacing the tailgate after i cut the speaker mounts out. I had other problems with it anyhow.

The new tailgate, I just got good Pioneer speakers and have been very happy. No head injuries.

A sub in the wheelwell would be good.

Yeah, I was thinking the extra weight would cause problems, so you just replaced the tailgate speakers with standard size but better quality, where they single cone base speakers.

I believe they would be paper cone 2 ways being the Fairmont.
by the way I'm not sure how much you'll really gain from 50x4 max amp, as most head units are 45-50x 4 standard.

I got 150w 6"2 ways in the doors and tailgate.
I have a 4x25w Pioneer tape/tuner/mutiCD controller with 12 disc stacker. Yes I still have a pile of tapes and I play some occasionally.
sounds great for a basic upgrade cost me $600 5 years ago.
