Hi all,

I've been playing around with different sized shims to get my reground cam properly fitted. Today when i removed my rocker gear from the head I completely forgot to block the holes which lead down into the engine.

To see holes I'm talking about check out this thread:

Anyway all the HLA's and shims fell out and I've managed to account for all of them except for one HLA.

If it fell into the abyss will it go straight to the sump or will it get somewhere where it can cause damage?

ive got 3 or 4 floating around down there along with a few shims LOL!!!

As long as it makes it down into the sump it should be fine. you could try fishing with a magnetic wand perhaps?

I'm borrowing a friend's mag pickup tool on the w/e to see if i can get it.

do you know if all of the 4 holes lead down to the sump? some seem shallower and others deeper.

a sectioned view of the engine would be great if anyone has one

yeah, i had the timing cover off, and the sump lowered slightly and still couldnt fish anything out, so just left it..... be running good since, fingers crossed !!

As said provided it made it down to the sump it should be OK as it will not fit back up the strainer. It might come out one day in an oil change. If it went down the timing chain passage then big dramas await.

have a look at phong's post here with the picture of the head gasket on the bare block.
as you can see all go to the sump except the one right at the front, which is blocked by the AU head Gasket.

that's a relief, thanks for that link MMD. I'm sure it didn't fall down that first hole, so i'll drain the oil and see if it comes out of the sump.

Man that is the worst fear realised. For the price of oil ($21ish HPR15 :D) it's worth finding out where the little sucker is!

i found the little sucker, no damage done.

just a note to anyone who's replacing HLAs, don't forget to prime them with oil before you reinstall them!!


on a side note, does anyone know what the clearance should be between spring and HLA? i saw it before but can't find it again.

btw, how'd you fish out the lifter? i assume too big too come out the drain hole

no, didn't get it out the drain hole. I was lucky and it was sitting at the bottom of the 3rd hole (from the front) in the head. got it with a magnetic pickup tool.

u sure about the zero clearance FordFairmont? i could of sworn last time i had them out i had to check the clearance when re-fitting.....maybe i'm losing it :)

well i wouldnt have the faintest clue how to shim up lifters if its an unknown gap taken off a cam.

but i do know with Wade Cams, you have to put one extra shim in each lifter, and when thats done, there is no gap at all.... the hla is pressing onto the valve

this a crowcams re-grind, and the shimming procedure they told me for it was to play around with different shims until the clearance was correct. I guess if clearance is supposed to be zero, I'll add shims until the HLA is touching the valve.
