Hey all,
After going and getting a quote to get my valve stem seals replaced ($450) i have decided to do it myself. 1st: has anyone else done this and is it possible over a weekend? 2nd: Could you please pass me on some knowledge. 3rd: Im guessing that the engine will prolly have to come out? Anymore information wil be muchly appreciated. Cheers in advance

head just needs to come off.
Get a quote for getting them done if you drop the head off to them. you will find it significantly cheaper as you have done some of the work.

no need for the head to come off
u can do it on the car u just require a good aircompressor and the adaptor to allow u to plug air into the spark plug hole this holds the valve up

this holds the valve up or you can lower the piston, feed rope in then turn the crank so the piston forces the rope onto the valves

there must be some chance of bending valves (even just slightly) using the rope method

there is bugger all clearance on tdc....and if you didnt know what u were doing and kept turning the motor over hard the rope could get stuck between the piston moving up and the inlet valve beginning to open or the closing exhaust valve...
of course if you made sure it was on the compression stroke it couldnt happen, but there are people out there that could easily confuse themselves

One of the things i was worried about using compressed air, was sometimes the retainer gets stuck with the collets, and when you start winding down the spring compressor it can push the valve down. If it were compressed air holding it up, you would think the valve would drop in? |

no it doesnt drop in, just use some common sense and dont beat the s**t out of it. I preffer compressed air as it is quicker and easier, If you can get the rope in there and the valves held up in less than 30 seconds, then your doing better than I can.

usually you pressurise the cylinder, and give the valves a tap with a hammer before putting the spring compressor on, tapping it will pop the retainer off the collets if it is stuck
