Hi guys,
96 EFII, auto with 217k. it's got a loud tapping noise at any sort of acceleration. Im almost certain that its the sound the exhaust system makes as it starts cooling down after the engine has been switched off. Could it be loose or a blockage? Thanks.

is it like a rattling noise? does it just occur under acceleration? might be engine knock.

I had the same problem on my 95 EF Fairmont auto and it was loose bolts in the convertor in the gearbox

with mine, the noise was there when i accelerated to any speed, was not there at idle.

I've heard it at idle a few times, but mostly under acceleration.
Wouldn't be internal you think?

dunno mate, just have a look at the bolts on the water pump, if there loose, tighten them. if not then have a look at your bolts on the auto converter

it wouldnt happen to just be an exhaust leak?

nah, it's from the engine bay, happens at idle too, higher the revs, louder and faster is the tapping?

the exhaust manifold is in the engine bay,, and will also increase in volume and speed with revs..
but it could also be a colapsed lifter.. lots of things make a tapping noise -mitch

I've got one which is in my gearbox, manual, which I thought was a lifter to start with. NFI what I'm gunna do to fix it either.

If the frequency of tapping increases as revs increase, then I would point the finger at the lifters. You can pull the rocker cover off and have a squizz at the lifters to see if any of them are stuck in.
Don't think exhaust would make a tapping noise even a bolt is loose. phong =P~
