Hey guys.
I am very close to getting my LTD back on the road, but the trans is stuffed, its the factory FMX. I've already priced all the required rebuild parts, it adds to abit under 400. I have a spare BTR 4speed out of an EF 6, can i some how make this go in instead? I'd rather the extra gear anyway. Power wise shouldn't be a drama, this model 351 only has 5kw and about 50nm more than an EF 6. So, has anyone done this? If so, how/what bellhousing/yoke/tailshaft etc. And how did the tranny run electronically? Thanks guys

I do actually, but its still in primer and in bits. It will hopefully be painted in the next month.
All body work is done, all rust cut and double skinned, no bog. Ready for paint and reassembly. This photo is after i pulled it out of my mates shed, the growing grass around it is from his car being there for weeks.

this was my old one, 12.3 quater mile on street tyres. twin 3'' dumpies, 4v's 3800 stally and 4.5 diff gears. Threw the engine in a XB with a 5000 stally and 1st pass 11.7 3rd pass 11.5.
It was the ultimate cruiser.

Jesus ya need to spend elswhere I think. A BTR in that isnt worth the effort. Rebuild the FMX or source a c4. They bolt straight in.

Lethal ea - that is indeed a nice ride, you shoulda kept it.
On the trans note, why would the btr be not worth it? if its as simple as a bellhousing and yoke swap to fit,and a few wires, i'd have an extra gear, and the added bonus of not having to rebuild the fmx. To fit a c4 i have to change the yoke and crossmember anyway, so finding a good c4 without paying too much, then finding a crossmember and yoke would be harder than just rebuilding the fmx. Plus with a btr, i could put in one of those cheap shiftkits for burnouts hehe.

A AOD would be easier swap then a BTR.
The starter is on the same side as the FMX. The trans mount is in approximately the same spot and you don't have to f**k around wiring in a computer, tps ect.

The I6 BTR's are not the same internally as the V8 one. Even though the parts look the same they are not. You'll need a V8 job to start with and, as 351EL says, the starter is on the other side which makes for possible header problems. Extension housing is longer on the V8 BTR too.
An AOD is an easier option except they also need considerable beefing to last. It's not so much the torque difference but the weight of the vehicle too...yours aint light. Check out http://www.lentechautomotive.com/ You'll see they aren't cheap but this guy is the pioneer of tough AOD's Personally I'd use a 4R70W which is the wide ratio version of the AODE(E means electronic). It's already tougher than the AOD in std form and the electronic control means it will auto shift where you want it to...something a hydraulic box can never do. Baumann engineering make a stand alone controller for these. |
