Hey dudes/dudets, On the way home tonight the 4 speed in the EF was making high pitch whining noises under acceleration and a slight knocking noise at idle and further on taking away from the lights the the car lost drive just like it was in neutral. If I turn off the car and restart it it gains drive again for 200metres or so before again loosing drive. I take it the auto has died? The car has done 200k and up till this point it was working completely fine. Does anyone have any idea how much a change over is if the tranny is stuffed ? Bloody crisis imo.

I'd be looking at the fluid.
check the dip stick if there's one, and or any signs of leaking. Including recovery tank. If there's a dipstick, and its low, add some fluid, may solve the problem. As for the noise, and if a $5 fluid doesn't fix it, try get a quote from a service yard, or even a tranny service. but obviosly try not to get stung by making them charge you for a service Plus a reco box! These boxes are pretty bulletproof, some see 500,000k's without a hiccup.

Thanks mate..could really be just fluid? It would be awesome if it was. I'm saving for a 5 speed convo and don't have the $$ for an auto replace atm.

half a million k's is pretty rare, but to give you an idea the auto in my ed decided to pack it in at just under 250,000. top up the oil and see how it goes, if not do a full fluid change but drain the oil into a clean bucket so you can inspect what came out of the box. if it has a s**t of mettalic powder through it then its safe to say its rooted. when mine packed it in, i would be able to take of somewhat normally but if i booted it and the auto dropped back a gear it would just slip and bounce of the limiter
