is it necessary to have the header bottle setup as all the e,a and b series falcons do?id like to put a regular radiator in to use the space where the header bottle is.i cant see why it is necessary but maybe there's a reason i dont know of
cheers

I think the main reason for the header tank is that the highest point for water in the engine is above the top of the radiator. If you had a can there, it would drain out some coolant. The tank creates the high point in the system, for filling as well as to let any air out easier. :D

yes it needs to be the highest point, but I'm not sure if you are asking if it needs to be there or if it is required full stop?

i'm asking if its needed at all, commodores have their radiator lower than the thermostat housing with a bleeder on the thermostat housing,we have an adaptor you screw on where the rad cap goes to fill the system higher than the highest point(bleeder) which allows the system to be completely filled and bled, then you put the cap on and its done.falcons have that hose on top of the thermo housing that is used to bleed ect and the same thing could be done with the adaptor to get the water higher than that point to bleed and fill the cooling system

do falcons have trouble with cavitation and this is the primary reason for the header bottle?therefore without it air pockets would form in the thermostat housing and bye bye head

falcons do have a bit of history with air bubbles in the head yes...

The header (overflow or expansion) tank is there to collect the coolant when the cooling system overheats. When hot, the radiator cap allows the excess coolant to leave the system and the thermostat housing connection allows it to return when cool.

If you remove the tank, you'll have to check the coolant more often. If neglected, you could cook your engine. I wouldn't recommend removing the tank.

id be running an overflow bottle with a recovery cap still so that would all be pretty much the same.im trying to come up with a different style(smaller) header style tank

I noticed the other day looking into the window wiper area on my XF, there is a black container there that looks like an expansion tank. If so you might consider mounting one of these in a similar location on your car, or in some way adapting the idea or tank. Tha tank was smaller than the e-series tank.
