the springs i have are the ute 7 leaf ones, i think its just bouncy because they are lightly loaded (about 100KG of its 540 is on the towbar) i bought a few huge bags of birdseed/dogfood today and that seemed to help it a bit.
Fuel consumption around town in stop/start type driving and some highway stuff was 13.5 l/100KM which is only about 0.5 higher than usual. fuel tank and diff are gone, im using a trailer axle (its about 2/5ths the weight of the diff that came out) Next model will use lighter RHS for the diagonal bracing and the main bit across the sills + rails will be 150*3 angle, im also contemplating gutting the insides of the doors (side impact and inner steel), a fibreglass front is also an option OR i could use an EA wagon as they should be lighter (less body strength) another weight saving could be made with plexi windows, but this would be expensive (and the s**t scratches easily) on a side note a lot of people were looking at me funny today

The tailgate is pretty heavy with the rear screen.
I dont think the windows weigh much as they are very thin. The springs are the heaviest bolt on part together with diff. I guess 540kg is not that heavy really.

That's a pretty wicked trailer! It doesn't sound too heavy considering the material you built it with & what it was originally!
My tandem weighs about 560kg or so iirc, it's a 12x6 load area that my dad built back in 1976, and my g/f's bro & i rebuilt in 2005. It's got hydraulic over ride brakes on 1 axel, other axel is unbraked, and a GVM of 2000kg ( acc to rego sticker lol ). The max without electric break away brakes here in vic. I have seen similar done with the tubs from utes, but never seen a wagon converted to a trailer! I've also seen a 1ton van converted. Cheers ToranaGuy

i saw an interesting trailer yesterday, it was being towed by some big yankee pickup. the trailer was two pickup beds both cut about 50mm infront of the wheel arch, one turned around and welded to the other (so it had a double axle setup)

When you think about it, it's a pretty cool idea, you only really need to build a chassie & fit some axels with brakes. If your not fussed about weight just use some ute axels with all the brakes & so on. I have seen a few of the AU, BA & BF ute tubs turned into trailers. If you keep the diff & brake setup, something that could be sorted in about a day's work! Plus they look damn tuff! I'm thinking when i replace my box trailer, i might just go get a ute tub instead of building a trailer from scratch..... Cheers ToranaGuy

hey all (this is my first post on here saw the Trailer on Ebay) but what are all your thoughts on doing a Sedan Trailer for a portable BBQ.
As I saw the Trailer and Thought I'm Constantly Lugging the BBQ down to Work for BBQ lunch's for the Staff once a week on a friday at 12.30 for a 1pm lunch and it Grubby's up the Boot of my EL Fututra evan with a tarp. so what do you guys think of a BBQ Sedan Trailer it got me thinkin after seeing this one so this gave me insperation. I'm Thinking cutting in the same section on the B piller down and leave about 50cm of floor in front of the pillar on the angle to Create an Aero dinamic front (like the big Plastic things Trucks have on there roof to direct air flow over the Trailer) and in the Boot Section recess the BBQ enough to allow the boot to Shut and allow an acess portal each side for the Gas Struts Stainless steel bench's and a 4 burner BBQ an din the Back one of those Portable Camping Fridges hooked up to a solar Panel on the Front wind deflecter section (a car battery solar Charger 2 - 4 of them to generate the charge for the battery to keep the Fridge Running) and General Storage for the Esky seats Chairs Etc and rig the Gas Line up for the BBQ up like they do on Caravans sit and lock them in place on the Towing A Frame at the Front Just an Idea so does any one Think it'll be worth all that work for A BBQ trailer But I also have a 1990 TP Mitsubishi Magna Grand tourer so I might do one in the TP Wagon for that (as A Trailer would Be Handy) But thanks for a great Idea As I only Use the 1998 EL Futura for Long Trips over 30km (the magna is cheaper to run around town being a 4 banger) but generally I Let mum Drive the EL (all though I should learn not to as she's Pranged it twice 1st time she hit an oil patch and hit a metal Road barrier and the 2nd time she ran up the bum of an L plater in an EF GLI who had No Brake Lights and bang up the Bum of them no Damage to the EF apart from a small ding in the Bumper My EL Futura came home on a tow Truck with no Bumper and a Hole in the Radiator and COndeser From the Towbar and a slightly caved in skirt but that was easy pulled out rope attached to it and the other end to a Tree reverse and thats how We Remove a tree Ford Style (and Smoke the Neighbours out at the Same Time) but it's on the Road again a bit shabby though needs paint and a new bonnet just waiting on the new Fibre Glass one to arrive) Catch ya Adam

yeah depending how the front was worked it might end up looking weird. i have seen it done with utes plenty of times and more easily done.
attached is a quick microsoft paint version of how it could look on a car You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. |

How about something more like this?
You could put the barby in one end, and a small fridge and utensils in the other etc. BenJ

I reckon the sedan wouldn't look bad if it was flat top'd like a hard lid for a ute. Keep the lower half of the doors operational to stow away items like the gas bottle, utensils, fridge, booze & so on.
You know what i wanna do for a bbq trailer? I own a mighty boy ute, it's a great little esky. I wanna make a proper esky insert for the tub, to hold the cold water run off from the ice you fill it with. Then i wanna get a mighty boy, cut it off @ the B pillar, and turn it onto a trailer. I reckon i could jam in a 4 burner bbq, and maybe a flip / slid out wok burner. Keep a spare tyre where the original should be, and remove the petrol tank & say fit a water tank, like a caravan. I have a few other projects i need to finish up first tho! Cheers ToranaGuy

Hi all wanting to make a wagon trailer.
My fairmont wagon has now been fully stripped and is available for pickup. This will be a bare bodyshell including tailgate and rear windows. I will probably throw in some more parts that I dont need or can't sell for project $$. The catch is i need it gone by the end of the weekend. I am willing to hoe into it with the 9" angle grinder to reduce it into a trailerable and liftable size.
