OK heres the deal, i drove home from werk today about a 15 min drive, the coolant light comes on, i open the bonnet and unscrew the resoivoir cap and the coolant F**k explodes everywhere litres and litres and litres of it! this sure aint normal is it? the temperature guage says normal so i have no idea what is going on.

You should never remove the cap of your cooling system immediately after driving. You should always wait for the engine to cool and the pressure to decrease in the system. It is stated in your vehicle owners manual.

I think we have all done it once in our life. I did it once just out of curiousity and burnt my hand. All because I wasn't quick enough in moving my hand away when the cap blew off hitting the bonnet with an almighty *BANG*.

i client of mine did that the other day - ended up in gero hospital with 3rd degree burns on his leg & hand!

it can be done but not advised, there are 2 steps on a normal radiator cap(1 to release pressure without the cap coming off and 2 to remove cap). hold a rag (big enough to protect hand from steam and hot water) over the cap, slowly unscrew till a surge is felt. wait until the surgeing has stopped then undo slowly, if no surging is felt and no pressure is felt on the top radiator hose the pressure has been released. unscrew the cap all the way making sure steam does not come in contact with skin.

Back on subject, probably a good time to reverse flush your radiator.

still shouldn't do that though, it can cause thermal shock in the radiator and the engine block causing it to crack.

If anyone is interested in why the water explodes it's because it's kept under pressure in teh radiator. About 15psi or something.
Now, water boils when the 'vapour pressure', that is basically the pressure that the water turns to steam, exceeds the atmospheric pressure. So, if you're on top of Mt Everest, you can't boil an egg or have a hot cup of coffee because the water boils @ about 40 degrees C. Atmospheric pressure is lower, so a much lower vapour pressure is needed for the water to boil. The reverse happens in your car. The water is under more than atmospheric pressure. This is so that the water can be heated above 100C without boiling. So, as soon as you take the radiator cap off, the pressure in the coolant system drops to atmospheric pressure and the water that is maybe 110C instantly boils and spews coolant everywhere with a big bang! Just a little physics lesson if anyone was interested. |

I had the exact thing happen to my AUII about 6months ago. Left home for work at 4am dove 10kms and my temperature guage rockets up(normally its barely registering at this point in my journey). Pull over pop the hood and loosen the radiator cap. The pressure released with the coolant sucking back into the bottle. Waited 5minutes then took off only to never have a problem again. It was flushed about 2 weeks before this happened by a radiator place when my welsh plug s**t itself.

Luckily i escaped serious burns thanks to my superi quick reflexes i had and old sock when i unscrewed the cap, i just dropped everything and watched a mass volcano erupt!  i spent like half n hour cleaning the engine bay the other week too that p****d me off more cos now its dirty as all hell. does it stain do u know?

some coolants will stain or leave slight marks, just hose it off quickly when engine bay is cooled down n dont wet any electricals too much if u can help it.
Ive never taken mine off while hot; thank goodness lol! I just put a new coolant overflow tank in and i can tell u now coolant smells horid when burnt on extractors, clean it off as good as you can. Live n learn.
