Well i need some help with the removal of some rounded head bolts that a stuff sidchrome socket has left me with.
Does any one know of a way of removing them, any help would be good. After reading a workshop manual they say that there is lockite 234 used on the head bolts, this could explain how hard it was to crack the bolts. Is this true ? |

DO NOT hammer and chisel your head bolts DANGER WILL ROBINSON... Tap on slightly smaller socket that is single hex and try that first.

Find yourself a set of Metrinch sockets. They grip on the flat, not on the corners.
Or worst case scenario, get yourself some bolt removers, they have a spiral shape to them. Coventrys will have them. Metrinch are hard to find, but well worth it. Coventrys have similar, but havent tried them to know of their quality..

I used a standard 12 point socket once and rounded two heads bolts, so i drilled the heads off. It took a while and required hand skill but worked.
Next time i took head bolts off i used some 6 point impact sockets i got from supercheap for about $16 and they worked fine.

If they are rouned, use one size smaller socket, or weld a nut on the end and use that as your anchor point to undo them

+1 to what TerroristGHIA said.
Definitely agree to welding a nut on and using that. Always use a Single (6 sided) hex socket for head bolts, i'd never not use a single hex impact socket personally.

Yep as said, weld on a nut over the head.
It will also help with loosening up the loctite too.

u can weld nut 4 shaw but i drilled mine out to the shaft size in 3 stages then twisted the head off then unscrewed the rest easy took 5 mins

I used the multi sided socket and managed to get the head bolts off no problems. I just made sure the socket was on the bolt dead straight and not angled. Will be investing in single hex socket soon though...don't want to push my luck lol
