At the moment, my Cortina GT is powered by the orignal 1600. So, i was thinking a late model engine like this one.
[url] http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Ford-Focus-2-0L- ... dZViewItem [url] Get rid of the injectors, and drop on some Webbers, but let the ECU control the cams and so on. Will it work? Has anyone done anything like this?

is it a east / west motor??? not that it matters you would just have to make yourself some engine mount adapters, would be a interesting mod!!!:)

Yes, they are east west engines. Does anyone know if the ECU will work with out the entire inlet manifold assembly, because I will use webbers. The only thing I want the ecu to control is the vct. Does that make sence and will it work?

do a google search, this motor is VERY popular as a conversion into cortina's and escorts (it shares the bellhouse bolt pattern with the old motors)
i didnt think these were VCT? & youll find you wont be allowed to run webbers on an engine that was originally EFI

the ECU wont like you fitting the webers.
fit some throttle bodies to it and run a wolf 3d or similar. they have no dizzy so you need some form of ECU to run that anyway. they make about twice the power of your 1600. or you could make a new intake manifold that fits the car and use all the original sensors and TB. |

Or will not having a maf affect the ignition?

I've seen these engines and the earlier silver tops inside Escorts. They run on a wasted spark EDIS ignition system and some blokes use hi-po motor cycle throttle bodies and injectors a-la webers or dellortos. There are a few very well documented mods to perform to make this engine fit, with the water pump one of them. Very much worth the effort on an older pommy ford however if you have an original GT, I would be loathe to mod too much.

water pump is not a problem. you just need to make sure you buy the right pump, there are two, one spins left hand the other spins right hand.
the thermostat is on the back of the head and will hit the firewall. there two commonly available pipes to fix this, one is through retoford in the UK. you will need a sump, again you can buy a retro ford one or make your own. If going with injection, that factory plastic intake manifold won't fit. there are a few single throttle body manifold to fit the early fords or you can use webers or bike carbs. the weber manifold is about 95 UK pounds from burtonpower, i've got some ZZR carbs to go on mine, i'll be making the manifold, but you can buy them premade from BOGG BROTHERS in the UK. if the motor came from and auto donor car you need a spigot bearing, (you can buy this from ford) you can run the factory waste spark using a mega jolt ignition controler, MSD make an upgraded coil that will fit. you'll also need to make or buy an alternator bracket and use a shorter serpentine belt the factory rods are good for about 7200rpm but will need some good ARP rod bolts. with a good bolt set a stock bottom end is good for about 200hp. The stock cams with a good intake and exhaust is good for about 150hp some good cams will get about 180hp. you will need head work for any more then. |
