I got myself a 10" kicker sub off a mate.
Her car got written off and she only took the sub not the amp so my question is what amp would i need to power the sub? 4 or 6 channel?
I have all stock ford pioneer speakers and a pioneer hu if thats helps
cheers

if you wanted all four pioneers plus the sub amped you would need a 6 channell amp but if you only wanted the front two speakers and the sub amped, a four channell would do the trick and then you would run the rears off the head unit and as they are only the stock pioneer speakers, you would have no trouble at all running them off the head unit :)

No you don't NEED a 6 ch amp you will need 5 channels 1 for each speaker and 1 for the sub, a 6ch will do the job or you can get a 4ch and a mono or a 4 ch and a 2ch bridged for the sub depends on the budget....

As outlaw said, or even if your on a reallly tight budget just run the stock splits off the headunit and get a semi-decent monoblock or 2 channel (that you can run bridged) to power the sub

Would amping the stock speakers be of much benefit anyways? I'm pretty sure they blow under the output any after market head unit, let alone amped... Your best bet would be to pick up a 4 channel amp and some half decent spilts, run them off 2 channels, bridge the other 2 with a LPF for the sub, and leave the rears connected to the head unit...

Budget for some new speakers then. The stock one's won't last long with real power being fed in.

Doesn't matter. Listen to a bunch in your price range. Be sure to take a CD you like along, and make sure they're not doing any funny stuff in the display head unit (weird EQ to cover up problems for example).

Then pick the ones you like best.

As data_mine says take a disc that you like especially if it is a bit stressful for speakers and make sure that they set everything to "flat" and no sub, get them to show you that they are set to flat don't take their word for it and no you don't need to get Pioneer speakers, you don't even need to get the same brand front and rear...

Dont waiste your money on rears. Spend it on the fronts only as they are the main speakers, the rears are only a fill. Alot of decent systems hardly use rears at all. Mine is faded to about 80% front and 20% rear.
