SOLVED, i removed the speedo sender and only half of the gear cam with it. I put the sender in from my wreck, you gotta love em, and the trans and speedo now run fine.
So for some reason when the speedo sender died, the EL ecu wasn't giving LHM, it was giving something much worse. I'm thinking i might carry my EBII ecu around in the car! Thanks Steady ED, you've been helpful numerous times.

Glad you got it sorted mate, I was headscratching a bit there with some of the issues
Very strange what the EL ECU was doing. relaxed_diplomacy wrote: it seemed to start in first but then went into third and stayed there no matter what i did, unless i shifted manually, in which case i could access first, second and third only. Is this LHM?
And just to confirm, yes that is limp home mode, I don't know why the EL ECU was doing the other stuff?

The car has some gremlins at the moment, the stereo deck is on the blink even though power to it is constant, there is occasional throttle hesitation/fading, the injectors were firing massively or leaking massively when the car was last run on lpg, when the injectors were disconnected it stalled under braking on lpg, the idle is sometimes too low, and i'm sure there's at least one more. Whether they or an underlying issue may have affected the EL ecu's trans control i don't know.
