I believe my alternator is on its way out and just need to make sure there isn't any other issues.
My gauges in my cluster are showing constant drops in volts from 13.5 down to 11 while driving. Also as the volts drop the oil pressure gauge goes up to 5 from 3. Is this just due to lack of power from the alternator? Any info would be good. |

i dont know about the oil pressure skike.. -perhaps its just the guage as it is being affected by the voltage drop... i had the same problem when my ef alternator s**t itself.. volts randomly dropped low.. -and stayed there..

could be the regulator inside the alt that has gone
very easy to replace

It only just started doing it today. When I first started driving around town the gauge sat at 10.5 with the air con on. I then turned that off and 30 seconds later it spiked back to 14 and then dropped back down to 11 where it stayed the whole time. I've since cleaned the contacts and plug and have driven 100km to take my daughter home and the whole time it was doing what I said in my first post.

Yeah if it is a alternator prob it will be the voltage regulator. It happened to mine but i had power surges to 16 Volts seeing the same symptoms with my gauges due to the fact they are all electroinc gauges. It is very bad for the ecu to get power surges like that so i would either stop driving the car and get the alternator recoed or disconnect the plugs from your alternator to stop it charging the battery you should be able to drive for a day maybe two on battery power alone if you don't have every accesory on

If you can put the battery on a charger ,the smaller the charger the longer you leave it on.Also check that the positive terminal on your alternator isn't loose and clean your battery terminals if they are corroded.Cheers

Battery is brand new (only a month old) and I've checked and cleaned the connections on alternator. It was fine for the trip home just now (another 100km) with lights and air con on, till the moment I was one street a way from my place and the voltage dropped off again.
Ah well... I guess it's off to the auto elecky asap to get it fixed and hope it is a simple fix $$$ more money out then coming in these days. |

my bet would be the brushes
they could be worn and making contact sometimes or sticking or poor contact because of oil contamination if it is either of these a strip and clean and new brushes is a cheap fix but do it soon else u WILL blow the regulator or diodes guaranteed |
