Hey guys,

Recently got a new gear shifter to repalce my boring plastic one... Problm is it doesn't want to shift the gears... It screws on fine but the button doesn't seem to be spring loaded.... I bought this as a supposedly brand new item off ebay which it does appear to be other than th button not working... Is this an easy fix as in i'm doing somthing wrong or is there a proble with the shifter?

Cheers,

Pat

i take it you have an EF and a EF replacement shifter? make sure the internal bar is seated correctly. also check the lock in pin at the bottom, as my old s**t setup snapped at the bottom inside and somehow locked it into gear.

Check the bar is seated properly inside the handle.

Yeah theres a little notch cut out the that should be towards the front, also make sure you have it in the right way up eg the little washer thing should be in the shifter not the gearknob.

and as above make sure its seating correctly.

Thanks guys after taking it off and looking at it it turns out it's not the shifter but the thread on the bar won't let the shifter screw all the way down i tried it on a a spare bar and it works erfectly so i'll have to swap that over...

Cheers

you can pull the shifter knob out of the handle. i did this when painting an almost dead grey 1 in black. theres like a circular piece on the front of the shifter t hat pulls out. then theres a philips screw housed in there,

a way to tell a working shifter. is when it is removed from the car the locking button will be pushed in as if u are holding the button in selecting a gear. u can grip it. sometimes thats not easy and pull it out as if it were in the park position. if it pulls itself back in when u let go you know its alrite.

i got a el replacement. EL are grey with grey button EF grey with black button. i painted the EL handle black and put a EF button in. an effective and cheap mod to do

why not just paint the EF one you had black? saves pulling 2 apart to make 1

Yeah but if he has the chrome and leather one you have to take the leather off first.

I scored a Black Leather EL GT auto knob with chrome button. Now that is a nice bit of gear.
