EA series 1 (1988--89) had the three-speed auto. Four-speed auto was introduced with the EA series 2 (1989--90).
The EA2 I think was the only model to have a badge on the boot or tailgate which said "4 speed electronic automatic" or words to that effect. This was to proclaim the introduction of an auto transmission with overdrive and other features. |

by the way, lock up torque converters still have a slight amount of slip. That's part of the reason why auto's with one still have slightly higher fuel consumption than a manual trans.

Also, the early EAs had a 1 hose expansion tank, that one has a 2 hose. The 88 EAs had 1 of the Compliance plates on the front radiator support panel too. Another is the 88's had 8mm headed bolts for the inlet manifold, whether it be CFI or MPFI.

I bought a 1987 EA not long ago, it had the 3.9litre centre point and 3 speed auto, actually drove really well (albeit slowly) I didn't care becuase i bought it for the body only (very light) now has a T5 and an EL XR6 engine in it, much faster now
personally i would never buy any e series pre mpfi if i didn't plan to upgrade it anyway, 3 speed = 300kms per tank

I had a 3 speed 3.9MPFI and it was a ripper car! Used to get at least 380km's a tank, used to hammer (once it got going... took its time getting there though) I would recommend a 3 speed... if you were planning on a manual conversion. My Auto copped an absolute belting and never missed a beat. |
