Hey guys , i just bought a momo steering wheel for my au off this place in victoria and nows the hard bit, how do i take my old one for and put da new one on. i think theres two screws with a plastic cap ontop do i just remove them and then the air bag comes off?
but those screws aren't the normal patterns , anyone know where i can get one of those special screw drivers, or am i trying to take off the wrong screws, thanks for any info. |

I take it you have bought an MOMO airbag steering wheel ... if you haven't ...it's illegal ... just checking.
Also with airbag wheels ... you need to disconnect the battery ... and I think ECU as well for a certain period of time before you can think about taking your wheel off as well.

this has been covered many times before...
search for it... but for now.. disconnect your battery.. wait 5-10 mins have a stubby unscrew the two screws on the side of the steering wheel slowly remove air bag, place it bag facing up.... be very gentle with it.... the funny screw thing, i always forget the name but its something like a torq screw or something

I believe you need an anti torque tamper screwdriver to get them off. Bunnings should have them.

You need a T-50(size) torx bit to undo the steering wheel bolt. You can get them seperately or in a set.
twirqurky the anti-tamper torx bit is the ones with a lump in the middle of them, like on the stereo head unit. The size code for them is TS-

is having a steering wheel without an airbag on a car that originally had an airbag illegal? in victoria? |

Oh ok thanks madmax. The T-50 bit is available form Bunnings as well.

It is illegal everywhere. It breaks the safety standards of the car, and may make it unroadworthy. |

yeap i cant wait till i get the wheel its in da mail already,, but i'm heading for to bunnings to see if i can get the bits, thanks for the info guys.

You will need-
Phillips head screwdriver Airbag removal tool (5 pointed torx screwdriver, bunnings didn't sell them so i got mine from FTG Auto salvage) Torx T50 Screwdriver, bunning sells the set for $30 (buy it, use it, return it.  )
1. Disconnect battery (not ECU!!) 2. Undo screws on the side of the steering wheel. 3. pull airbag off carefully. 4. Unplug the wire from the back of the airbag carefully. 5. Unscrew cc/volume controls from the steering wheel and undo phillips head screws holding the wheel on. 6. Undo the centre T50 torx bolt, but do not fully remove it yet as the wheel will come flying off as your eally have to pull the f**k to get it off..., but then once its loose take the bolt out. To install the new one just reverse the steps. All up it cost me $32 to change the steering wheel, Ford dealers quoted me between $60 and $95 to change it... |

just to add to glenn there, the wheel is stuck on REAL good, it'll take a wobbling/wriggling motion to get it off, and once it goes it'll clock you in the face - so as recommended leave the T50 screw in place.

Yeah i agree.. it feels like it won't come off at all. Grab it at 12:00 and 6:00 and shake the absolute F**k out of it for 30 seconds or more and it'll come off eventually... |
