G'day guys,
Perhaps I've developed a vagina without noticing and have somehow gotten sand in it, but I've noticed of late that my EF has a rather strong shudder when in gear at the lights. If I shift in to neutral, it goes away but when I sit in gear (on a cold or hot engine) the vibration seems stronger than I remember. No engine mods thus far, only a KnN panel filter.... but I noticed this before the filter went in, so it's not that. I changed the oil less than 5000kms ago but did change to 10w40 Mobil 2000 or 3000 oil (which ever was better) because I had some loud ticking at start-up. Apparently my old mechanic put some ridiculous 30w50(?) oil in it... whatever it was... it was too thick. Can anyone think of anything that it may be? Switch back to a high quality 15w40 oil perhaps? The 10w40 oil seemed to be a great improvement over the previous oil but that's probably not saying much considering the sludge that was in it without my knowledge (I found out months after the service and have since changed mechanic). Any pointers or suggestions would be great, the car is due for a service in 2000 kms and has had the power steering switch (leaking) and fluid replaced more recently than the last 10 000km service. Many thanks, -K |

mate, i got the exact same problem and it isn't the oil..
im fairly certain its my engine mounts, so i will get them replaced. Just recently i noticed a 'knock' sound when downshifting to 2nd at about 80km/h so that pretty much confirms it..duno why it only happends in drive though.. |

Engine mounts was pretty high on my list of possible things wrong with it, but if I'm honest, I'm no mechanic so that was just a logical conclusion. I'll have to take a look at them in the daylight.

Check your Engine mounts, especially the drivers side.
This is a problem with the EF, they are fitted with oil filled mounts, the oil leaks out and the mount sinks down and the metal of the two parts of the mount come in contact and vibration from the engine is transfered into the body. Geat thing is that they don't seperate like the other style of mount, so engine stays in place. For some reason it is nearly always the drivers side/exhaust which is good as this is the easiest side to change, imagine tring to do the passenger side under the BBM. Have a close look at the mount and you will see if the metal parts are touching. |
