Hi, anyone out there experience any problems when changing the timing cover and timing gear on a 5L Windsor EFI V8 EF - EL models?
Mine has a corroded timing cover and worn timing gears. Can i get away with leaving the radiator in (have thermo fans)? Thanks |

You will need to remove the water pump and the coolant so you may as well undo the 2 or so screws and remove your radiator.
I had issues with the bolts being corroded that bad that I needed to drill them out. |

if you use the search button you should find my thread on doing this, should have most of the info you need.
just remember there is two front sump bolts that go into the bottom of the timing case. other than that its pretty straight forward, just a pain when you have big hands. raceparts are a good place to get a new timing case if you need one.

Dont buy a kc castings timing cover because the front seal housing is off centre, i also got a new ford timing cover from race parts for roughly 270.
I would only use a genuine ford timing cover. Use anti seize on the bolts that go into the water jacket.

Replaced the timing cover (as new secondhand Ford item $80) and timing gear set (JP roller). Only problems were removing the harmonic balancer bolt (so dam tight) and rounded off the pulley bolt heads so had to cold chisel them off and replaced with new high tensile ones. Old timing cover looked like it was about to split as it had a large amount of corrosion in left and right water channels. After a full day job its all good with no leaks. Managed to keep the same sump gasket intact. Total cost in parts was $230.
